The Rwanda Defense Forces ( RDF) Senior Command and Staff has expressed willingness to collaborate with the National University of Rwanda ( NUR) based Center of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (CGIS).
The desire of cooperation was declared during a visit held at CGIS in the framework of educational tour the command college conducted in the Southern Province recently.
The delegation of Rwanda Defense Forces Senior Command and Staff College was led by the Commandant of the college, Brig. General Jean Jacques Mupenzi.
The Director of CGIS, Dr. Gaspard Rwanyiziri on gave details on CGIS mission including capacity building, academic programs, research projects, achievements and the program of community service to the visiting senior officers.
Other two exposés about GIS and remote sensing were presented during the visit. In his presentation, Mr. Theodomir Mugiraneza, the Head of Society and Land Management Unit at CGIS, explained how GIS is a useful tool for Monitoring, Management and Prediction of spatial complex phenomena.
He then mentioned GIS applications including Engineering design and planning, Agriculture, Marine Sciences, water and soil management.
Brig. General Mupenzi commended CGIS activities and indicated that Rwanda Defense Forces Senior Command and Staff College students need to be equipped with GIS and Remote Sensing skills.
“In our security services, we occasionally need to interpret situations which may be facilitated by GIS and Remote Sensing. We would like to cooperate with CGIS so that we can have short courses at our college to understand how GIS and Remote Sensing influence operations,” he said.
He emphasized that the connection is in accordance with working as a team for the benefit of the country as it happens elsewhere in the world.
Dr. Gaspard Rwanyiziri promised the Rwanda Defense Forces Senior Command and Staff College cooperation in that field. He promised to present the wish of collaboration in GIS and Remote Sensing area to the top management authorities of the University.
The National University of Rwanda signed a MoU with the Rwanda Defense Forces on June 18, 2012 under which the former will provide lecturers for the Rwanda Senior Command and Staff College.
