A leading professor at the Huye based National University of Rwanda Prof. Esron Munyanziza was last Monday found dead in his home located at Taba in Huye district.
The death was reported by his house help who got suspicious after Munyanziza didn’t wake up after 10am.
Munyanziza has been the Coordinator of MSC program Agroforestry and Soil Management at the University.
“I broke the door because it rarely happens for him to sleep past 10am and found him dead,” said the house boy who is currently being held by police for questioning.
The academician’s body was taken to the University Teaching Hospital (CHUB) for an autopsy and transferred later to Kacyiru Police Hospital-Kigali for further investigations.
The investigation into the cause of his death is still going and is being handled by police.
Prof. Munyanziza was well known in the NUR community as a devoted follower of the 7th Adventist church and a preacher.
He was born in 1952 , in Karongi district. In 1994, he got married though his wife and child later died in a car accident in 1997. Munyanziza never remarried.
He was a Research Fellow at Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania (1995-1999) Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Sciences, Sokoine University of Agriculture (2000-2004) Masters of Public Health Student.
He was also underwent the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS), Philippines (2004-2006) Senior Scientist, Institute des Sciences Agronomiques du Rwanda, Rwanda (2006-2008) Professor, National University of Rwanda (2008 – till present) where he was the Vice Dean Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Rwanda (2008-2009) and Coordinator of MSC program Agroforestry and Soil Management, National University of Rwanda (2009 – present).
