Prof Silas Lwakabamba has been appointed as the new head of Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Education (INATEK) in Ngoma district starting with the month of December 2015.
Lwakabamba will replace the former INATEK rector , Father Dominique Karekezi, was found dead in his home early August 2015 and the cause of his death has not been explained till now
Dr. Jeanne Nyirahabimana, the Deputy Dean of Studies at INATEK confirmed the development and said that the institute has been operating without a rector after the loss of the former rector and this has left a gap in their administration.
“We are counting lot from the Prof. Lwakabamba for his experience and leadership skills which he has showed. This is what we need and we hope that his coming on board will build on what the previous rector had done” Dr. Nyirahabimana said.
Prof Silas Lwakabamba, 68, is a long serving educationalists, who was the pioneer rector of Rwanda’s first school of technology (Kigali Institute of Technology –KIST) in 1997, and later rector of University of Rwanda before the recent reforms in 2013.
He occupied this position (as rector) until his appointment in February 2013 as Minister of Infrastructure in the Cabinet of the Rwandan government and as the Minister of Education of Rwanda since July 2014 until June 24, 2015.
Silas Lwakabamba was born in 1947 and educated in Tanzania. He went to the University of Leeds in England where he studied engineering, graduating with a BSc in 1971 and a PhD in 1975.
He subsequently returned to Tanzania where he joined the staff of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam. He attained his professorship in 1981, and later became Dean of the faculty.
