Abdallah Murenzi the mayor of Nyanza district has identified volunteerism as crucial in addressing current national and global challenges.
The mayor said with economic problems in rural areas more hands are needed in terms of volunteers to help solve the national difficulties.
Murenzi made the call on Wednesday, during the closure of a ten-day civic education training in Nyanza district.
The training served as a platform for them to learn more about Rwandan history, patriotism, Ndi Umunyarwanda progamme as well as other development programmes.
“Most of the youth have a misconception which is mushrooming that one cannot do anything without any form of payment,” said Murenzi. He added that if the society rectifies this misconception, the country will be assured of moving forward in terms of development.
“For you students in holiday season, find a worthy cause and embrace the spirit of volunteerism. There are plenty of great ways you can get involved and make a difference in someone’s life”
The mayor also urged the students to work hard and fight vices like drug abuse, gender based violence, human trafficking and corruption, among others, that impede development.
